The following tribute appeared in the November/December 1996 issue of the Journal of Forensic Identification.
In Memoriam: Charles "Randy" Goodwin
Members of the Chesapeake Bay Division are joined by countless others throughout the International Association
for Identification in mourning the sudden death of Charles "Randy" Goodwin on August 22, 1996. For over three
decades, Randy Goodwin tirelessly devoted his exceptional energy and generosity to the interests and welfare of
the Chesapeake Bay Division as he ably served in many capacities during his long and selfless involvement, including
over 20 years as its most recent Secretary.
Randy Goodwin was born June 1, 1934, and began working in the Identification Division of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation in 1964. He joined the Chesapeake Bay Division soon afterwards, and became a member of the Parent Body
in 1973. Randy was never just a member of either organization, but a committed participant who, realizing that others
may shirk responsibility, offered more than his fair share. A true professional who believed strongly in the value
of alliances among professionals, Randy gave of himself in the genuine spirit of mutual concerns and cooperation at
their highest level, both on the job and in the activities of the IAI.
Any viable association needs both a heart and a soul in order to strive for the betterment of all, and Randy Goodwin
provided those needed elements within the CBD with enthusiasm and with love. To the many who were fortunate to know
him, Randy and the Chesapeake Bay Division became one, and all agree the Division was better for it. To the many
were fortunate enough to call him a friend, he was a remarkable human being who will be deeply missed.
The IAI extends its most heartfelt condolences to Nancy Goodwin and family. A donation to the R.L. Johnson Foundation
will be made by the IAI in his name.
