Members,

Despite a global economic crisis that slowed revenue and challenged spending, our Division remains firmly committed to providing support to our members for education. We are facing the challenge of fiscal constraints by identifying opportunities for greater efficiency, doing less with more, and asking more from ourselves. We continue to realize growth and achievement from of all of our members and committees with special emphasis on our Crime Scene Certification Program. Our Division would not be where it is today without the extraordinary people that make up this Division.

As I reflect on the work over the past year, I truly believe that 2011 will be remembered as an outstanding year for education in the Chesapeake Bay Division. We collectively accomplished so much on behalf of our members and made measurable progress on our goal to provide excellent education to all members. As one of the most successful regional Divisions, the Chesapeake Bay offered a solid program in the spring at Cambridge, MD, attracting nationally recognized speakers from the other side of the country like Ms. Michelle Triplett. Now, we have an even stronger foundation on which to accelerate our efforts and make 2012 even better.

Our spring conference took place at the heart of our Division. Forensic professionals from all over the country attended the informational general sessions and workshops. We welcomed IAI President Phil Sanfilippo and many guests to the beautiful Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay to focus on forensics. We were heartened by the turnout and remain committed to providing support to help law enforcement develop.

Please mark your calendars today and plan on attending the Chesapeake Bay Division's fall Educational Conference. The beautiful views and fascinating neighborhoods of surrounding WVU and downtown Morgantown, WV are a perfect backdrop for us to be enriched through the meeting's content and friendships. We plan to highlight what excites you about forensics, research, and innovative practice.

The annual fall conference offers presentations focusing on best practices. The educational offerings are great but the time between the sessions is also so powerful. This meeting is an energized networking forum for forensic professionals. Exchange ideas and discuss issues that you and your colleagues are wrestling with in your professional and personal roles. You will take away valuable solutions you can implement immediately at your institution/program.

The fall educational conference is in Morgantown, WV, October 21-22, 2011. I want to support the theme of this year’s International Conference of “Bringing the Future of Forensics into Focus”. Focus on your future in forensics at this year’s conference. Also available will be social opportunities for networking and getting to know other professionals in the various forensic disciplines. I look forward to seeing you in Morgantown!

There is little doubt that 2011 was a banner year for education and certification within the Chesapeake Bay Division. We continue to realize growth in our certification programs and memberships. Our organization has dedicated $15,000 dollars toward the 2015 centennial IAI celebration as a Gold Partner. We truly share in a proud past and bright future. Our challenge now is to fully implement all of the programs and policies in a way that makes a difference for our members. I am confident that we will be successful in 2012 and beyond.

Hello Chesapeake Bay Division! Thank you for attending the Spring 2011 Educational Conference! I hope you enjoyed your time in Cambridge, MD at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort. From initial feedback, the Conference was another educational success! Although attendance was down, we welcomed several people to the conference which included professional and student attendees, knowledgeable speakers, and enthusiastic exhibitors.

From the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony, I hope you took advantage of several opportunities throughout the conference. Our keynote speakers were inspiring, motivational, and even entertaining! Ron Smith’s presentation gave us a chance to think about the many generational differences while enjoying a laugh! Many conference and break-out sessions also provided several knowledgeable speakers on important and timely topics.

Attendees had lots of opportunities to meet new colleagues and connect with “old” friends at the celebration events.  From the Exhibit Hall with the opportunity to win great prizes, to the Welcome Reception, to the buffet dinners, I hope that you ended your conference experience on a positive note.

I hope that this conference exceeded your expectations and gave you an opportunity to re-energize as well.  I am honored to be your 2011 President!

Honored Members, Officers, and Guests:

Today I feel like a true Mountaineer who has planted his country's flag at the top of a mountain. I am excited to be your new President and naturally I am also slightly apprehensive that I don't slip when performing my duties. I know that I am here to do a job that we all hold as a vital and important role in the life of our organization.

The Chesapeake Bay Division of the IAI has a rich and very successful history. It has a track record of demonstrating all that is paramount about biometric identification. That is a huge responsibility and an inheritance that I take very seriously.

As a dedicated member of the CBD and a practitioner of friction ridge identification for 16 years, I have cared intensely about not just our reputation but about the forensic sciences as a whole and the educational services that we provide to our members and our peers. There are many demands on those of us in the identification sciences and there are many changes, and new challenges being presented to us every day. It is more critical than ever that we continue fostering our tradition of providing top notch, state of the art training, information resources, and critical professional networks to support these challenges.

The CBD would not be in this position without the exceptional work that has been accomplished in the past by the previous holders of this post who have worked so hard for us all. Laura Tierny is no exception. I want to thank Laura for her leadership, guidance and patience. I also want her to know how much I appreciate what I’ve learned from this past year. I know I am better having been on her team.

So, I stand therefore as someone who is ready to learn and with all of your help, I am ready to achieve our goals for the coming year. I understand that it takes a little while to get used to any new crew member at the helm. While I hope that my hand will be a steady one, the way I go will very much depend upon what you desire and how you wish to see us progress.

I know too that everyone accepting such a responsibility should seek help from those whose support are vital to him. No incoming president would be wise to announce a course of action without carefully considering where we have been before and where we wish to go from here. You will be looking to me for the experience and the passion that I can bring to this position. I will in turn, be looking to you for guidance and for a view point that I could not possibly formulate on my own. I believe that your input is invaluable and that our unity, diversity and our membership are our strengths.

I know that we will be seeking to build on our successes and to take advantage of the lessons we have learned in the past. Everyone makes mistakes and although I would like to think that I am wise enough not to, experience tells me, that I too may make them. I can only hope that the things we do will be well considered and for the benefit of all of us in this organization. I would also hope that our work will be as much about our profession as it about our wider family.

Our profession, after all, extends wide and its influence reaches far beyond our immediate needs and concerns. I appreciate that you are all busy people and that you have elected/appointed me hoping that I will not be adding to your burden. On the other hand, I am well aware that if I want something done, the person to ask is a busy person. I know that you wish to be kept informed and valued too for your contributions and experience. As such I hope you will be able to contribute much and that I can draw on that experience. I want you in your wisdom to help me make experience one that will expand, develop and further this wonderful organization for the benefit of all.
