Presentations:     Back to Topics

Presentations are normally held in the "Main Conference Room", and these are typically 1/2 hour to 3 hour lectures about topics of general interest to the Identification Sciences, Law Enforcement, and Forensic Science held in an auditorium that seats up to 200 people. Presentors typically augment their lectures with PowerPoint ®, slide or overhead projections. You will note that most Presentors are noted figures in their fields, or have recently been involved in high-profile cases.

Dress for the Presentations is casual .... jeans and polo shirts seem to be the preferred style of attire.

Workshops:     Back to Topics

Workshops are focused presentations on specific topics, also distinquished from Presentations by the high level of interaction and participation by the attendees. Workshops are sometimes restricted to 25 people, and may last anywhere from 4 hours to a full-day session. Workshops may begin in the days before the "official" start of the Conference, so you may have to arrive at the conference site early.

Be dressed for working with chemicals and other materials which may "soil" your clothing, should you get careless. Some workshops may be conducted outdoors. Remember, we hold our conferences in March/April and November, so you may need to wear warm clothing should the Conference be held in a location where the the weather can get cool/cold/windy.

Workshop instructors normally devote a lot of time to prepare outstanding handouts to students, and for material that allow students to get hands-on training with the real thing. Be certain to register early to any workshop or interest, as they fill up fast.

Vendor Breaks:     Back to Topics

Break times are built into the conference program to allow delegates the opportunity to vist the Vendors in the Vendor Break Room. The CBD-IAI typically attracts about a dozen vendors to each of our Conferences. Vendors typically bring actual products, equipment and computer programs which allow you to try out the "real thing" in "real time".

A particular Vendor may sponsor the Vendor Break, which means they will provide at no cost to you snacks and beverages for your refreshment. Expect to munch on cookies and pastries, and wash them down with an assortment of soft drinks. If you're lucky, and if you're in an agreeable mood, wine and cheese is sometimes available as refreshments.

Student Power:     Back to Topics

Students from Mid-Atlantic colleges and universities have become a major force at our educational conferences. These conferences are an excellent opportunity to become familiar with some of the major players in the forensic field, both in terms of the scientists as well as the manufacturers/vendors. Attending workshops are a way to bolster one's resume with specific skills and knowledge. Students seeking internships and jobs can meet supervisors from agencies at which they intend to apply.

Poster Presentations & Photo Contests:     Back to Topics

Poster Presentations provide a two-fold benefit to the educational conferences. The poster's presenter gets to participate in the conference in a way that does not involve any inordinate amount of public speaking skills. It's a way to try out your instructional capabilities without being thrown in front of an intimidating crowd of delegates.

The delegates benefit from the content of the poster presentations. The material presented by the poster is often research that the full-time scientist normally cannot perform for themselves. There is an unlimited number of topics that can be addressed, such as chemical reagents, controlled experiments, unusual aspects of forensic science, historical perspectives, helpful hints and tricks-of-the trade, survey results, etc.

The Student Development Committee of the Chesapeake Bay Division will sometime hold a Student Photography Contest. You may submit an original photo depicting a subject chosen in advance by the committee that complies with the contest rules. THe Photo Contest Registration Form is posted on the Conference Page of this website.

The poster presentation and photography contest participants are presented certificates of participation, and the contest winners are recognized by the Chesapeake Bay Division, during the Saturday night banquet.

Social Gathering:     Back to Topics

The Social Gathering is your opportunity to be informally introduced to the movers and shakers of the Identification and Law Enforcement world. Seek out the Instructors if you feel you need more insight into certain topic areas. Get introduced to the Supervisors at the various Agencies. Ask your fellow delegates about any pending job opportunities at their agencies. Collect business cards and pass on resumes. Discuss what the CBD-IAI needs to do in order to meet the expectations and needs of its members.

Some helpful hints about who to seek out.... Look for the delegates wearing the red badges These are the Past-Presidents of the CBD-IAI. The have spent at least 5 years in the thick of the running this organization. They know just about everyone there is to know in the CBD-IAI, and can point out anyone you wish to meet. Also, look for the delegates wearing the green badges. These are the current Vice-Presidents and Board of Directors of the CBD-IAI. They are fully aware of all the important topics of the day, and the operation of the CBD-IAI.

Meals and Prizes:     Back to Topics

Nobody starves at a CBD-IAI Conference!! Your conference registration fee includes the two (2) evening meals (Friday night and Saturday night) and the Saturday breakfast. The cost of lunch will be on your own, but the conference sites are selected with the need to have easy access to lunch places in mind. Free munchies are available during the Social Gathering and free refreshments are provided during the Vendor Breaks.

The dress for the Friday night dinner and Saturday morning breakfast is casual. However, dress for the Saturday night Banquet is "Dress-Up". This doesn't mean tuxedos for the men, or sequined gowns for the ladies, however this does mean "no jeans". Men are suggested to wear (at a minimum) a dress shirt, tie and Dockers®, although you'll find most of the gentlemen attired in a business suit. The ladies of course can choose from a wide variety of styles, but again, "no jeans" is understood to be the rule. Dresses (or blouse & skirt) will always be acceptable. An attractive sweater over slacks will also work. Should you have any question about the appropriateness of your clothing, kindly inquire during your conference registration, or at the last minute, ask the CBD-IAI Sergeant-at-Arms who will be at the door to the Banquet to collect your banquet ticket.

Be prepared to win a wide variety of door prizes (even the little kids seem to always come away as winners). A favorite CBD-IAI tradition is our famous 50/50, from which some lucky (ticket-buying)delgate will walk away with a "wad" of cash. Following desert, the V.P. will announce the winners of the door prizes.

Awards Ceremonies and Installation of Officers:     Back to Topics

The out-going President will conduct a presentation of awards, certificates and honors to the CBD-IAI members who have done commendable service to the Division, or have earned special distinction through their individual accomplishments (the Lillian U. Jenkins Special Achievement Award, and the Randy Goodwin Distinguished Member Award). The out-going President also has the right to bestow additional awards (Good of the Association) to deserving members of the Division. Recipients of the George H. Robinson Memorial Scholarship Award and winners of the Poster Presentation Contest are announced and acknowledged.

During the Fall Educational Conference, the CBD-IAI will conduct its Installation of Officers during the Saturday evening Banquet, i.e. the Installation Banquet. An Installation Officer will be the Master of Ceremonies for this occasion. The newly-elected Officers and Board of Directors will line up, solomley raise their right hands, and before the entire delegation pledge to perform their duties to the best of their abilities. The newly-elected Executive Officers (the 3rd. to 1st. Vice-Presidents) will then humbly do the same. The ceremonial highlight of the evening is the passing of the gavel to the newly-elected President, and his/her first address to the delegation. The out-going President (should he/she serve with honor and distinction) will be presented with awards and honors for a job well-done.

Business Meeting:     Back to Topics

Business meetings are conducted following the last Presentation on Saturday afternoon. Old and new business, Officer & Committee reports, and a financial report are given for all the business meetings. The election of officers is conducted only during the Fall educational conference. Only card-carrying CBD-IAI members are allowed to attend the Business Meetings, and to vote for the new Officers and Board of Directors.

The CBD-IAI is a vibrant, active and engaged non-profit organization, and being so, always has the need to address matters and concerns affecting its ability to serve its membership in an educationally and administratively responsible manner. Many outside and internal forces work to conspire to adversely affect our ability to conduct ourselves as a professional organization. Apart from the closed Board of Directors meeting, the Business Meeting is the delegates' opportunity to bring matters of concern before the Officers, and to suggest solutions and direction to our Division.
