Jessica Shaffer's President's Address |
June 19, 2024
I am writing this address as the newest President of the Chesapeake Bay Division of the International Association for Identification (CBDIAI). I am honored and humbled to take on this role and to represent the CBDIAI. I want to take a moment to thank my colleagues who have served in this position in the past. Without your efforts, this organization would not be where it is today. I also want to thank our vendors, without them, we simply could not offer yearly educational conferences or one day seminars. Thank you to our presenters, your willingness to share your knowledge with others has helped to develop the membership into the professionals they are today. To those who attended the conference in Ocean City, I thank you for taking the time to attend, I hope you were able to take some new information back to your departments. Last, but certainly not least, to our conference planning committee: you have done an excellent job of bringing every group listed above together and gave us an amazing conference. Thank you for all of your hard work.
The CBDIAI is a unique division of the International Association for Identification, representing several states in the Chesapeake Bay area. Because of this, members face different challenges depending on the geographical area that they serve. This means that we have a diverse set of needs when it comes to training opportunities. We are always excited to hear your suggestions for instructional materials and instructors.
As president, I am working with our various committees to ensure that you are kept up to date on new technology, equipment and challenges within the forensic science disciplines. To do this, I will need your help. Please consider submitting articles or case studies to the Editor to be included in the Chesapeake Examiner. This is an opportunity for you to showcase your expertise, research findings, and new practices that are working for your agency. Additionally I am looking to engage more of our members who specialize in crime scene processing, our law enforcement members, and other comparative science members. If you would like to assist in this effort, please reach out.
I am excited to announce that this year, 1st Vice President Meredith Coon is planning to introduce social events around the Chesapeake Bay region. These events are designed to allow us to get to know each other outside of the forensic world. The first event is a family friendly meet up planned for July 13 and I hope to see you there! Meredith is also working to bring our student membership an exciting one day seminar in October. Meanwhile, I am working with the conference planning committee to bring you a conference in 2025 that you won't want to miss. This conference will be held June 16-20 at Wisp Resort in McHenry, MD.
I want you to know that I am here for you. Please reach out to me with suggestions, requests, and even constructive criticism. I welcome the opportunity to speak to you. If any of you would be interested in serving the CBDIAI, please contact us-we would love to find ways that you can serve this organization.
Kind Regards,
Jessica M. Shaffer, President-Chesapeake Bay Division of the International Association for Identification
