Quarterly Webinar Series: How Many George Floyds Are There?

Abstract: Following the trial of Officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, medical experts raised concerns over the reliability of in-custody death investigations at Maryland's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). In response, a team of experts in forensic medicine and social science meticulously designed and executed an independent audit of restraint-rellated deaths in Maryland over a 17-year period. In this talk, I will further explain the impetus, procedure, findings, and implications of this first-of-its-kind endeavor.

Speaker: Dr. Jeff Kukucka
Professor of Psychology at Towson University and Co-Vice Chair of the OSAC for Forensic Science's Human Factors Task Group. Broadly, his work aims to better understand and protect against psychological sources of bias and error in forensic and medicolegal decisions. He often trains professional audiences on these issues and has worked as an expert witness in 15 U.S. States.
