Laura J. Tierney Message |
November 2010
It’s hard to believe, but the 2010 Fall Education Conference is now only a week away. This also means that the 2009-2010 term of office is coming to a close. Before I move on to my next position with the CBD, I would like to thank everyone for their support and assistance. It has been a challenging year, but I believe that the CBD will be stronger for having met and overcome recent challenges.
In addition, I would like to encourage everyone to give feedback on the future of the CBD conferences by going to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/C5L7DX8 and filling out the survey if you have not already done so. We will be discussing the results at the Fall Conference Board Meeting.
I look forward to seeing everyone next week and in Cambridge, Maryland, in March.
Sincerely,
Laura Tierney - President

In the last several years, being a forensic practitioner has gotten much more difficult. We are now not only required to know and understand more about our given disciplines, we are under greater pressure to be able to regurgitate that information to a judge and jury intelligently. And we need to be able to convince judges and juries that we practice good, valid science. At the same time we have very vocal critics who, while they often point out valid weaknesses or gaps in our disciplines, also may bend or twist certain information to fit our own needs.
The CBD knows that our educational conferences, in conjunction with the Chesapeake Examiner and the official website, are the first line of defense for many of you. Due to small agency budgets and large workloads, many of us cannot attend a multitude of training or spend a lot of time reading journals and the internet for information on the newest challenges, techniques, and equipment. For this reason, the CBD does its best to bring all of that to you as economically as possible. Our conferences offer presentations on hot topics in the identification fields and time with vendors as well as the opportunity to network and visit with new and old friends. The Examiner brings you articles on relevant techniques and topics and information about upcoming conferences, new offerings by vendors, and current information on the state of the CBD.
As many of you know, the CBD got off to a rocky start this year. We were able to enjoy a more intimate than usual conference but, unfortunately, this means that we did not bring in as much money as we have in the past few years. (Fortunately, our finances were able to absorb this). In addition, there have been several changes in the Officer and Committee positions. I would like to thank everyone who has served and is serving the CBD. In particular, I would like to thank our long-time Secretary-Treasurer, Carol Edelen, for all of her past work and dedication. We all hope you enjoy your newfound free time! I would also like to recognize Mike Gorden, Frank Curran, and Ken Smith for stepping up and helping to fill our vacant positions.
The idea of whether to hold one educational conference each year as opposed to two has been a topic of discussion within the CBD for many years. In order to help the Membership make an informed decision as to what might be best for the Division, the leadership of the CBD decided to host three years worth of five day conferences. As you know, we recently held our second five day conference and it is now time to get serious about collecting Membership input on the future of our conferences. To that end, the Officers of the CBD have discussed setting up a survey to gather that input and we hope to have that survey ready for you to complete in the near future. Please watch for this and plan to take a few minutes to fill it out so that we may do what is best for the Members and Division.
Of course we have the upcoming Fall Educational Conference at the Clarion Resort Fontainbleau Hotel, in Ocean City, Maryland, November 5-6. Work on the conference is well underway with the intention of bringing you the educational and technical support that you need in order to do the finest job possible. Thank you to everyone who is putting so much hard work and dedication into making another outstanding CBD conference possible.
My unexpected move to the President’s office this past March has been quite a challenge. There have been many people who have helped and supported me over the years and this year especially. They are too numerous to name individually, but please know how very much I appreciate everything. That being said, there are a few people in particular I feel the need to recognize in print. Linda Hileman and Lenny Butt have provided more support than I could have ever expected – I don’t know what I would have done without you! Because Brian Jones sits right down the hall from me at work, he often gets to hear my frustrations – thanks for listening.
As always, please feel free to contact me or any other Officer with your questions and/or concerns. I look forward to seeing you in Ocean City!
Laura
