"Level One" Friction Ridge Character
Level One detail is the pattern type, ridge flow, ridge tracing and ridge count of the detail in the latent or known print.
Ridge Flow in an Arch Pattern:
The general ridge flow in an Arch pattern is that the ridges enter on one side of the impression and flow or tend to flow out the other side, with a rise or wave in the center.
Ridge Flow in a Loop Pattern:
The general ridge flow in a Loop pattern is that one or more ridges enter either side of the impression, recurve, touch or pass an imaginary line from the delta to the core, and terminate or tend to terminate on or toward the same side from which such ridge or ridges entered.
Ridge Flow in a Whorl Pattern:
The general ridge flow in a Whorl pattern is that at least one ridge makes a complete circuit, and the remaining ridges recurve in front of two deltas in the impression.
"Level One" Friction Ridge Detail
"Level One" detail is the overall pattern configuration, the general ridge flow tendencies and the general morphology (size and presence of incipient ridges) exhibited by the friction ridge impression. This level of friction skin detail permits the recognition of the impression's focal points such as core & delta, enables the orientation of the impression and the distinction of a finger impression versus a palm impression.
For correspondence between the latent print and the known print, the 'Level One' detail would be in agreement in the same area in both impressions.
Individualizations cannot be established on the basis of correspondence in Level One detail. However, Level One detail can be used to formulate an Elimination under certain circumstances.
